Why no book value or listing prices?
NADA/J.D. Power valuation data is licensed through paid enterprise contracts only — there's no self-serve API for it at any price. Comparable-listing pricing (what similar cars are actually selling for) is the same story: every provider we checked (Marketcheck, CarsXE, etc.) requires a paid key. We'd rather tell you that plainly than fake a number or quietly not deliver what a "book value" label would promise.
What we do offer is genuinely free and authoritative: NHTSA's own VIN decode, recall, and complaint data — the same source dealers and regulators use.
Data from NHTSA (vPIC, Recalls, and Complaints APIs) — official but not exhaustive; not all VINs decode fully, and complaint/recall history depends on what's been reported to NHTSA. Not a substitute for a professional pre-purchase inspection or vehicle history report.
